01 - Day of the Region

The political Autonomy of Madeira, established in the Portuguese Constitution of 1976, is commemorated around the island. This day is celebrated with the following activities:
- Cannon fire in the morning
- Ceremony in the Regional Legislative Assembly
- Placing of flowers at the Statue of Autonomy by the Region’s officials.
- Te Deum in the Cathedral.

 
02 to 04 - Folklore Festival - 48 hours dancing
This unusual festival brings together all the regional folk dancing groups who put on their acts throughout 48 consecutive hours, in the district of Santana. This is also an opportunity to show a variety of gastronomic specialities, and the culture and traditions of this council area. There are outdoor stands where food and drink is served, in a very lively atmosphere.
 
07 to 10 - Funchal Jazz

A Jazz show will take place in the gardens of Quinta Magnolia in which international musicians whose names are connected to this music genre will be performing. Other jazz entertainment performances are planned for a number of bars and hotels in the city.

 
09 and 10 - International Meeting

Athletics meeting sponsored by the Athletics Association of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Takes place in Funchal with about 200 participants.

 
10 and 11 - Around the island Regatta
This regatta is hosted by the Funchal Naval Club, starting off from Quinta Calaça Bay and running eastwards to Caniçal. This is the fourth test in the Regional Cruising Championship.
 
 
  09 to 11 - Cattle Fair  
  Organised for the first time in 1955 in order to encourage development of animal rearing, this has become a rural event of particular importance to the Region. Various exhibits of animals and objects related to local farming are available for visitors to see in Santa - Porto Moniz. This takes place in a rural environment, and there are many outdoor stands providing home-made bread, meat roast on the spit and drinks.  
     
  17 and 18 - Regional Banana Display
 
  The Parish of Madalena do Mar is the venue of the Regional Banana Display. This event takes place in honour of the main local product, and also presents the opportunity for lively traditional entertainment.  
     
  18 - Madeira – Azores Regatta  
  This cruising division regatta is being promoted by the Funchal Naval Club and will run between the archipelago of Madeira and the Azores.  
     
  19 to 25 - “ Raizes do Atlântico” Music Festival
 
 

This is a festival of traditional music in which international groups of World Music will perform, as well as the best of Madeira’s traditional music groups. These concerts will take place at night, in the auditorium of the Municipal Garden.

 
     
  29/07 to 01/08 - Madeira Wine Rally  
  This is one of the most important trials of the European Championship, and the most important sporting event in the region. World-famous rally drivers bring their cars to this rally which takes place annually in the first weekend of August.
Thousands of people fill the mountain slopes in order to find a good spot to watch the rally. As the month of August is the month of most feasts, there are numerous outdoor stands selling food and drinks all over the island. This is one of the most interesting week-ends on the island.
 
     
  31/07 to 08/08 - Machico Gastronomy Week
 
 

With the objective of promoting the Region’s gastronomy, and this area in particular, this feast is held in Machico. Besides the gastronomy itself, there is the cocktail festival, football for veterans, beach volleyball, basketball and other activities with much music played by artists from Madeira and other national Portuguese musical attractions.
