09 - Feast of Our Lord of Miracles

Every year, the town of Machico commemorates this feast in the Chapel of "Senhor dos Milagres". This is one of the oldest of Madeira's chapels, destroyed in the flood of 1803. It was rebuilt the following year. The statue of Our Lord was washed away in the flood and found years later. Thus thousands of people pay it homage during a night procession, in which the street lights are switched off and the atmosphere of religiosity is accentuated.

10 - Regional Meeting of the Bands

In the first week of the month of October, at the end of the traditional religious feasts, this meeting takes place in Ribeira Brava. This is a cultural event, created in an attempt to conserve Madeira's musical heritage.

It takes place in the early afternoon on Saturday with a procession which includes all the regional bands which pass through the main streets of this village. Then, the bands get together in the courtyard of the main church, and each band presents its individual repertoire, usually for 20 minutes. The meeting ends with a combined anthem composed specifically for the occasion. Trophies are then handed out, and a celebration follows.

29 - Ivete Sangalo to perform in Madeira
On 29 October, yet another international star is coming to Funchal to give a great concert, as part of the celebrations of Madeira, European Region 2004.

The Brazilian singer began her career playing in bars and then did shows in inland cities in Bahia. After meeting the producer Jonga Cunha, founder of Bloco Eva, she joined Banda Eva, with whom she has launched six albums and sold more than four million copies.

The Madeira European Region 2004 festivities began in January with a fabulous show starring José Carreras. They continued in February with the Portuguese singer Dulce Pontes and in March Diana Krall brought international jazz to Funchal. April saw a performance by the famous dancer Joaquín Cortés, while the violinist Vanessa Mãe played here in May. The Italian singer Eros Ramazotti gave a concert in June, UB40 in July. In August, Nelly Furtado performed at the Port of Funchal and in September it was Julio Iglesias' turn.

Madeira is honoured to have had the privilege of welcoming such high-quality artists over these last few months.
