SANTA LUZIA GARDEN

Madeira “humanises” Funchal

Over the last few years, Funchal has become an increasingly attractive city. Some streets and squares have been completely closed to traffic, other streets have been partially closed and new monuments and gardens have been built to make Madeira's capital even more beautiful.

The Santa Luzia Garden was born at the site of the old Hinton sugar and liquor factory. Some 17,000 square metres of green areas managed by Funchal Municipal Council are the fruit of the restoration of the area by the Santa Luzia Stream in Funchal.

Thanks to the refurbishment of Avenida do Mar opposite the Port Authority and Praça da Autonomia, which was used as a car park for many years, there are now benches and broad paths for the city's inhabitants to enjoy, in an essential move towards renovating and revitalising the city centre.

Nearby, the City Gates have been built in Largo dos Varadouros, going back to the old City Entrance, which was erected in 1689 and demolished in 1911.

The new gates are a faithful replica of the old ones and bear the original shield that was previously kept at Quinta das Cruzes Museum.
